How to Get a White Heat Ring Off a Wood Table After a Hot Dish
Overnight Fix
A white ring from a hot dish or a glass is moisture trapped in the finish, not damage to the wood. Pack 2 tablespoons petroleum jelly or full fat mayonnaise over it about 1/8 inch thick, press plastic wrap on and leave it 8 to 12 hours. Wipe it away. A faint haze left? Rub a paste of 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon olive oil with the grain, about 20 strokes. Not on high gloss or piano finishes. Dark or black? The water reached the wood.
You need
- 2 tablespoons petroleum jelly or full fat mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- Soft cloth
- Plastic wrap
Mix it
- For the overnight step, use the petroleum jelly or mayonnaise straight out of the jar, no mixing required.
- For the buffing step, stir the baking soda and olive oil together into a thin paste in a separate dish.
Use it
- Pack the petroleum jelly or mayonnaise over the entire white mark, about 1/8 inch thick, and press a piece of plastic wrap over it.
- Leave it 8 to 12 hours, overnight is ideal.
- Wipe the goop away and check. A lot of rings are simply gone at this point.
- If a faint haze remains, put a dab of the baking soda paste on the cloth and rub the haze with the grain, light pressure, about 20 strokes. Wipe clean and follow with the weekly wood feed.
