How to Clean an S-Code Couch Without Water Rings
Rubbing Alcohol Method
Lift the cushion and check the tag. S means solvent only: water leaves a permanent ring on these fabrics. Open a window with a fan blowing out and put out every flame first. Test under a cushion and wait 10 minutes. Oily spot? Cornstarch for 30 minutes, then vacuum. Spray 91% rubbing alcohol on a white cloth, not the couch, and blot from the outside edge in. X tag means vacuum only.
What it fixesSpots and soil on S-code couches, the ones where plain water leaves a permanent ring.
You need
- 1 cup 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch, for oily spots only
- 1 empty spray bottle
- 2 white cotton cloths
- 1 box fan
Mix it
- Check the tag. This is for S and SW codes, and for a couch whose tag is missing or unreadable. If the tag says X, stop here and close the book. X means vacuum only, and any liquid, solvent included, leaves a permanent ring.
- Pour the rubbing alcohol into the bottle straight, no water added. Water is the whole reason S-code fabric rings.
- Label the bottle. This one is flammable and it needs to say so.
Use it
- Open a window and put the fan in it blowing out. Do this before you spray.
- Test on the back of the couch skirt or under a cushion. Wait ten minutes and check for color transfer on the cloth.
- If the spot is greasy, dust it with cornstarch first and leave it 30 minutes, then vacuum. The powder pulls the oil out so the alcohol only has to handle what is left.
- Spray the alcohol onto your cloth, not onto the couch.
- Blot the spot from the outside edge toward the middle. Never scrub in circles, that spreads the ring.
- Switch to a clean section of cloth every few blots so you are lifting soil instead of moving it.
- Let it flash off on its own. It dries in about ten minutes and leaves nothing behind.
Dale's noteThe cornstarch step is what separates this from every alcohol tip on the internet. Alcohol alone struggles with body oil, but powder first and alcohol second gets there in two rounds. Working outside-in is what keeps S- code fabric from developing a halo.
Don'tDo not use this near a lit candle, a gas water heater pilot light, or a space heater, and do not spray it in an unventilated room. Alcohol vapor is flammable. Also never cut this with water to make it go further, water on S-code fabric is exactly the ring you are trying to avoid.
