How to Clean Outside Windows and Screens Without Streaks
Vinegar Bucket Wash
Mix 1 gallon warm water with 1/2 cup white vinegar and no more than 1 tablespoon dish soap, since extra soap is what streaks. Pop the screens out and lay them flat, scrub both sides with a soft brush and a little solution, and rinse with the hose. Hose the glass to knock off grit, sponge top to bottom, then squeegee in overlapping downward strokes, wiping the blade after every pass. Early morning or a cloudy day, never in direct sun.
You need
- 1 gallon warm water (3.8 L)
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon dish soap
- Bucket
- Sponge or a car wash mitt
- Rubber squeegee
- Dry microfiber cloth
- Soft brush for screens
Mix it
- Mix the warm water and vinegar in the bucket.
- Add the dish soap, no more than a tablespoon. Extra soap is the number one cause of streaks because it does not fully rinse off glass.
Use it
- Pop the screens out first and lay them flat on the grass or against a fence. Never clean a screen while it is in the window, you just push dirt into the frame channel.
- Wet each screen with the hose, scrub both sides with the soft brush and a little of the solution, rinse, and stand them on edge to dry.
- Hose off the glass to knock down loose grit so you are not dragging sand across the pane.
- Wash the glass with the sponge, working top to bottom, then squeegee in overlapping downward strokes and wipe the blade on a dry cloth after every pass.
- Dry the edges and the sill with the microfiber. Rinse any plants under the windows when you are done.
