How to Get Pet Urine Smell Out of Tile Grout and Hard Floors
Pet urine smell still coming off the tile, grout or baseboard? Blot, rinse with warm water, then spread a fresh mix of 1/2 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 tablespoon baking soda and 2 drops dish soap. Leave 15 minutes, brush it into the grout, wipe and rinse. Mix it in an open bowl, never a sealed bottle. Not for natural stone. Patch test dark grout.
What it fixesUrine smell in tile, sealed concrete, linoleum, baseboards and inside kennel trays.
You need
- 1/2 cup 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 2 drops dish soap
- 1 cup warm water, for the pre rinse
- Open bowl for mixing, never a sealed bottle
- Paper towels and a cloth
- Old toothbrush for grout lines and corners
Mix it
- Mix this fresh every single time you use it. Stir the baking soda into the hydrogen peroxide in an open bowl until it dissolves.
- Add the two drops of dish soap and stir slowly.
- Use it within the hour. It loses strength as it sits and it must never be stored in a closed container, because the gas it releases builds pressure.
Use it
- Blot up everything wet with paper towels first. Any liquid left behind just dilutes what you are about to apply.
- Rinse the area with the plain warm water and blot it dry. Skipping this step is why most people fail here.
- Pour or spread the mix over the spot and let it sit 15 minutes. On tile, push it into the grout lines with the toothbrush, since grout is porous and holds almost all of the odor.
- Wipe it up with a damp cloth, then go over the area once more with clean water and dry it.
- Check the baseboard and the wall behind the spot. Male dogs and cats spray vertically and the wall is very often the part that still smells after the floor is clean.
Dale's noteDo this in daylight and check with a cheap UV flashlight afterward at night. Dried urine glows, and you will find spots two feet away from where you thought the problem was.
Don'tPatch test colored grout, dark tile and stained or sealed concrete in a hidden corner and wait an hour before you commit, because peroxide bleaches dark grout and colored sealer in blotches. Keep it off marble, travertine and any natural stone entirely. And do not use any ammonia based cleaner on a pet accident before or after this, since ammonia is a component of urine and to the animal it smells like another mark, which invites them right back to the same spot.
