How to Whiten Yellowed Pillowcases and Gray Towels Before Guests

Oxygen Bleach Soak

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of the hottest tap water first, add 1/2 cup oxygen bleach powder and stir a full 60 seconds. Use it the same day. Anything not pure white gets a 30 minute seam test. Gloves on, submerge the whites and push the air out. Soak 4 hours for dinginess, overnight for pillowcases yellow for years, stirring once or twice. Wring out, run a normal wash, dry in the sun if you can. No wool or silk.

Whitening Soak for Dingy Whites and Towels recipe card: 1 gallon hot water, hottest tap, 1/2 cup oxygen bleach powder, A bucket or a clean tub, Gloves
What it fixesDingy grayed whites, yellowed pillowcases, dull white towels, and white cotton shirts gone beige over years of washing.

You need

Mix it

  1. Fill the bucket with the hot water first. Hot is not a suggestion. Oxygen bleach needs heat to break down into peroxide, and in cold water it sits there inert all night.
  2. Add the oxygen bleach powder and stir a full 60 seconds until you cannot feel grit on the bottom.
  3. Use it the same day. Once dissolved it spends itself whether there is laundry in the bucket or not, so yesterday's batch is plain water today.

Use it

  1. Colorfast test anything that is not pure white. Dab the solution on an inside seam, wait thirty minutes, and check for fading before the item goes in.
  2. Wear the gloves and submerge the whites completely. Push the air out of towels so they actually sink.
  3. Soak four hours for general dinginess, overnight for pillowcases and collars that have been yellow for years.
  4. Stir once or twice if you walk past. Fabric that sits folded against itself comes out blotchy.
  5. Wring the items out and run a normal wash with your regular detergent, nothing else added.
  6. Dry in the sun if you can. Sunlight is the strongest whitener you own and it costs nothing.
Dale's noteDo not confuse this with the sour towel strip soak. That one is the smell soak, washing soda and borax, and it strips the film out of towels that go sour when they get wet. This is the whiteness soak. It does not chase odor, it oxidizes the yellow and gray built into the fiber. Different problem, different chemistry. Also stop putting fabric softener on towels. It coats the cotton in a waxy film that traps gray and kills absorbency.
Don'tDo not soak wool or silk in this at all. Oxygen bleach releases peroxide and peroxide dissolves protein fiber, so a wool sweater comes out thin and weak right where it sat. Keep elastic and spandex out of a long soak too, since bras and activewear come back baggy. And no colored item goes in without that colorfast test.
